Update on the (OFC) Old Fort Cemetery:
Feb. 8, 2002

The Public Works Crew and Pecos County Historical Commission has been working on the old fort Cemetery. Around 300 combined man-hours has been spent on this restoration so far... The area has been cleaned, water outlets, benches added, and trees planted and all the downed and crooked tombstones have been reset. Broken tombstones beyond repair still need work to preserve them The Commission has spent $1000.00 dollars on trees and benches. The City Public Works and Marcy Prock from the Adult Probation furnished us a welder to build steel crosses and markers for unmarked known graves. During this process three graves were found after a hollow washout over the coffins was discovered when we were installing the markers. The wooden coffins were dated by pieces of a buried tombstone with July 15, 1903 also part of the stone with Mr. & Mrs. Cates was found as well. So far no records have confirmed these 3 deaths at the County Courthouse, but they are there.

Using this find as a test, Ernest Perkins tested his brass rods on the site. He did indeed get positive hits on the site. We tested it on known graves, they too got positive hits too. We then proceeded to look for other lost graves in the yard. We got sixty five hits. Mostly in straight lines running north and south, evenly spaced apart. Rumor had it that there were graves east of the fence as well. There were: we got 40 positive hits on four rows of graves spaced evenly running north to south under Water Street. We marked the site with crosses painted with dayglow orange paint. The fence was built in the 1940's out of material from the old train depot after a fire destroyed the second story of the building. The Texas Historical Commission has the electronic technology to confirm the graves however only one man does this for the state and the wait may be lengthy for him to make it here to confirm the sites.

We did not have time to explore the area to the south and west and more graves could be discovered.

Wildflower seed has been ordered and will be planted this month for spring and summer cover. The seed is called the butterfly and hummingbird mix. The city will open the gates 8 to 5 during weekdays for visitors.
