Bill McCurtis is the founder of the unit, our Regimental Sergeant Major, and President of the 501(c)3.
He graduated Horace Mann Senior High in 1965 and went directly into the Army, training as a tank crewman with 2nd Battalion, 64th Armor, 3rd Infantry Division, "Charlie" Company after attending Infantry Leadership Course, and rose to the rank of Sgt. and Tank Platoon Sergeant.
The unit was a major part of the "Blocking" force in case the Soviet Bloc decided to invade Germany during the Cold War.
Being an only son, the Division was rotated to Vietnam without him. He transferred back to the States to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, where he became N.C.O.I.C. of Record Target Detection Range, part of the Senior Cadre of Record Rifle Qualification Range #42 and a Drill Instructor.
He served six years ending with an Honorable Discharge.
Upon leaving the Service to care for his Mother, he returned to the profession he was trained for at an early age (13 years old).........truck driving. He has been in the Trucking Industry as a driver for 40 years now. During that time, He has been privileged to be counted as one of the top drivers in the profession; a "heavy haul specialist." In other words, the payload weight on his trailer(s) was a minimum 200,000#. He has personally hauled a little over 1,000,000# on one load. He is presently "winding down" his driving career because, in his words, "teaching the history of the BUFFALO SOLDIERS, and teaching it TRUTHFULLY and FACTUALLY, is much more important."
