Following Congressional approval on 11th of January 1905, the Indian Campaign Medal was authorized for wear by Army personnel by General Order 12 in 1907. The medal was awarded for service in a variety of campaigns and engagements against Indian tribes throughout the Western states between 1865 and 1891. Personnel qualified for the Indian Campaign Medal under one of the following conditions:

  • -Service in Southern Oregon, Idaho, northern California, and Nevada between 1865 and 1868.
  • -Campaigns against the Comanches and confederated tribes in Kansas, Colorado, Texas, New Mexico and the Indian Territory between 1867 and 1875.
  • -Modoc War in 1872 and 1873.
  • -Apaches in Arizona in 1873.
  • -Northern Cheyennes and Sioux in 1876 and 1877.



The Spanish Campaign Medal (US Army) was established in 1905. It was given for service ashore or on the high seas while enroute to any of the following countries: Cuba (11 May - 17 July, 1898), Puerto Rico (24 July - 13 August, 1898), Phillippine Islands (30 June - 16 August, 1898). Like many other campaign medals the ribbon of the Spanish Campaign Medal was changed in 1913 from the red and yellow to a yellow and blue (version shown).
